Is this the face your child makes when asked to read?

We get it.

Or maybe this?

We've seen it before.

Or maybe even this?

We can help.

Are you a teacher who is frustrated at not being able to find decodable stories that appeal to your students with Literacy Disabilities?

I have been teaching children with L.D. for several years, and one thing I really struggled with was to find reading material that would interest these often-older students. When it was time for the ‘read to me’ part of the lesson, I was constantly met with rolling eyeballs and comments such as “This book is so babyish!”

My student’s frustration was what kick started me on this journey to write decodable short stories, limericks and poems to help keep struggling readers engaged.

As a teacher you will be pleased to know Beeline Books are decodable, brief, funny and not ‘babyish’.

Why our books?

Decodable

Following the Science of Reading model these books are mainly decodable making the reading experience a lot less frustrating for struggling readers. The texts are in a sequence that gradually builds on English language skills. Beginning with short vowel sounds increasing in difficulty through to the more complex skills such as vowel digraphs, dipthongs and R controlled vowels.

Funny

I have written these short stories to appeal to a child’s sense of humour. Adults may find some of them a little gross, but your students will most likely have a ‘smile on their dial’ while reading them.
Science tells us that humour helps improve learning by making it more likely to retain knowledge in our brain.

Phonemic awareness

Books that rhyme help children to learn word patterns.

Short

If your student/child has a literacy learning disability, then you will have noticed that they tire quickly when reading. Too much text can be very overwhelming for these learners. Beeline Books are designed to keep them engaged and are no more than a few pages long – making reading time more manageable.

No 'cutesy' drawings

Big kids don’t need pictures in their books anymore, right? Well, that’s debateable, but this is often the perception of struggling readers whose peers are often reading chapter books with few or no illustrations. Kids who have difficulty reading are often still being dished out early Reader books with ‘babyish’ pictures. That’s why Beeline Books aren’t illustrated. If your student has an artistic bent then there are spaces purposefully left for their creativity to run wild.

Low cost

As a SLD teacher I know firsthand how expensive it can be to buy reader books. Beeline Books are available to download and read on your device or to download and print off a physical copy that can be easily compiled into a booklet. This cost-effective method allows me to keep the prices low. These physical booklets are ideal for children to take home to re-read to a parent for practise.See prices for individual book downloads or bundle downloads in the ‘Shop’ section.
